PLANTAS FOTOGRÁFICAS / PHOTOGRAPHIC PLANTS / 1998
with biologist Deborah Miller, CPP volunteer

Our History

CPP was founded by Carlota Duarte, a Mexican-American artist and a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart, an international order of Catholic nuns. She has an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design / RISD, and her photographs and paintings have been exhibited and published in the US, Mexico, and abroad.

Originally financed by donations from friends, the project has expanded thanks to a growing number of small grants and private contributions and, since 1995, funding from the Ford Foundation.

CPP has also acted as catalyst for other entities that promote and preserve indigenous photography, including the Archivo Fotográfico Indígena, a photographic archive, and Lok’tamayach, an independent group of indigenous photographers in San Cristóbal.

In 2010, CPP entered into a three-year partnership with the Flint Institute of Arts (FIA) in Michigan to promote activities in both Mexico and the US. With FIA administrative and programming support, CPP is able to focus on future planning and development to strengthen its mission: support for indigenous Maya artists.
