Odella. A photographic essay by Carlota Duarte. 1990. Odella
Chatel was known as an eccentric character living in Boston’s South End
in the 1970s and 80s. Born in 1930, Odella was abused and neglected as
a child. Beginning at age nine, she spent the next thirty years in
institutions. When photographer Carlota Duarte moved to Boston in 1974,
she met Odella who asked Carlota to take her picture. What evolved over
several years was a moving photographic study of Odella posing as she
wished to be seen – movie star, gun moll, sex symbol, with her comments
on the photographs. ISBN: 0-9624109-0-X Suggested donation: $20. |
