Funding history
The
Chiapas Photography Project began in 1992 with individual donations
obtained by Carlota Duarte. Arts International and The Puffin
Foundation awarded grants within the first year that allowed the
project to continue. During the first few years, Carlota divided her
time between fundraising activities in Boston and photography
activities in San Cristobal. An annual update to interested individuals
reached more and more people each year and the project grew. The update
continues and donations from this appeal support certain activities of
the project.
Since 1996 the Ford Foundation has provided major support for the Indigenous Photography Archive. This support from Ford has made possible the impressive development of the Education, Collection, and Outreach programs. In order to sustain and develop current activities and projects, additional funding sources are needed.
The
Archive also receives income from the sale of its photos and
publications, as well as donations or rental fees for hosting exhibits,
that goes toward future exhibitions and publications. Income from works
by individuals is shared between the archive and the artist. The hope
is that one day AFI can be self-sustaining.
To Make a Contribution
We are
pleased to announce that in order to establish an endowment-like fund
for the future of Lok’tamayach and AFI, we have formed a partnership
with the Maya Educational Foundation (www.mayaedufound.org). For more
information about this new arrrangement, please read our October 2004 Annual Update Letter.
